Answer by EpicTrollage
I would listen to what the doctors are telling you. Chances are 3 years of premed and 3 more at medical school, plus but long they’ve been working as a doctor (+3 more years for specialization) probably means that they know what they’re doing.

Just take the prescription and stop wondering whether it’s safe or not. All drugs have undergone years of testing and trials and have been approved by the FDA.

What do you reckon? Answer below!

Alternative Healing Programs Available Today

Alternative Healing Programs Available Today

Find Alternative Healing Programs in the United States and Canada. With growing consumer demand for natural and alternative healthcare, there has been steady growth of alternative healing programs. Aside from healing arts schools and other complementary medicine schools, a number of vocational schools and technical colleges have begun offering alternative healing programs in massage therapy, as well as other natural healthcare disciplines.

For those students pursuing careers in massage therapy, there are a fantastic variety of alternative healing programs that offer massage training. In these particular courses, students are introduced to the history and philosophy of massage; in addition to education in anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology. Typical alternative healing programs in massage range between 300 and 500 hours, and involve hands-on training in deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, and sports massage; among other modalities. Generally, graduates of alternative healing programs in massage therapy must attain certification to practice in the State in which they reside; and to become nationally certified, students must have bought a minimum of 500 hours’ training.

Alternative healing programs in herbal medicine are also quite well loved. Whether you choose to pursue a professional occupation as an herbal medicine practitioner, or if you’d simply like to learn enough about herbal remedies for self and family, there is a growing number of alternative healing programs in herbal medicine and Chinese herbal medicine. In most cases, these programs are divided into separate levels of training, and result in a certificate or diploma of completion. Supplementary studies may include iridology (study of the iris), kinesiology (muscle testing), essential oils, aromatherapy, and Bach Flower remedies.

Other alternative healing programs encompass the wide spectrum of energy healing arts. For example, there are some schools that are solely dedicated to the teaching of Reiki, which is one of the more widely used forms of energy healing; known for its effectiveness in stress relief and promotion of wellbeing. Additional alternative healing programs in energy medicine include touch therapy, meridian therapy, crystal singing bowls, harmonic balancing, visualization techniques, color therapy, light therapy, chakra balancing, and more.

Some of the more in-depth alternative healing programs are offered through alternative medicine schools in acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathy, homeopathy, and holistic nursing, among others. These specific educational programs generally require prerequisite education of at least two – four years of undergraduate studies (or the equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree), and can take up to four years to complete.

Which one of the many alternative healing programs is right for you? That depends on how far you’re willing to go with your career aspirations. Because alternative healing programs are diverse in nature and vary in training hours, the educational possibilities are limitless.

If you (or someone you know) are interested in finding alternative healing programs, let professional training within quick-growing industries like massage therapy, cosmetology, acupuncture, oriental medicine, Reiki, and others get you started! Explore career school programs near you.

Alternative Medicine University: Making Healthful Practitioners

Find Alternative Medicine University in the United States and Canada. Today’s alternative medicine university is on the rise; partly due to the increased interest in alternative and holistic medicine. Now students have ample opportunities to gain comprehensive education in a variety of healing arts that lead to professional careers; such as natural health practitioners, naturopathic doctors, chiropractors and many others.

The diverse nature of academic and practical training that is afforded through an alternative medicine university is quite stunning. Students enrolled in an alternative medicine university will quickly learn the multitude of possibilities that exist in this ever-growing healthcare industry. For example, homeopathy courses offered through an alternative medicine university will provide candidates with in-depth studies in phytotherapy, aromatherapy and other related botanical medicine. This goes without saying that an alternative medicine university may also extend comprehensive coursework in herbal medicine, acupuncture and Oriental medicine, reflexology, reiki and a vast assortment of innumerable natural health and alternative medicine fields.

An alternative medicine university frequently offers certificate and diploma programs, but also provides degree programs in a variety of alternative medicine practices. Degree programs extended through an alternative medicine university may include elaborate academic programs that have been specifically designed for the future practitioner in mind. Some of these (courses) may include career training opportunities to become licensed acupuncturists, doctors of chiropractic and the like.

An alternative medicine university helps to develop healthful and natural caregivers who are, upon successful completion, able to provide essential mind, body and spirit healthcare services to patients. Because complementary and integrative medicine are truly making a strong impact on conventional medicine, an alternative medicine university regularly provides prospective students with training options that will lead to personally and professional rewarding careers as massage therapists, Oriental medicine doctors, hypnotherapists, holistic practitioners and nurses, Osteopathic practitioners, herbal medicine specialists and a wide array of other related professions.

Hate Drugs? Try Natural Therapy

Despise Drugs? Try Natural Therapy

In alternative medicine, the term ‘Natural Therapy’ refers to an eclectic self-care system that is primarily concerned with building and restoring health through prevention techniques and healthy lifestyles. In natural therapy, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disorders is undertaken by the therapeutic use of natural methods and materials.

The philosophy underlying natural therapy is that all living things have an innate ability to heal. This innate ability flows through us as energy or ‘vital force’ and it promotes self-cleansing, self-repair and self-healing. If the path of this vital force is blocked, external symptoms appear and a ‘dis-ease’ is diagnosed. Once the flow of this energy is restored, excellent health too will be restored.

Natural therapy stipulates that the immune system, nervous system, hormonal system and detoxification pathways all work as a unit. This ensures our survival. If given proper support, care and nurture the body will find its sense of balance automatically, WITHOUT the use of medicine.

Natural therapy places a fantastic deal of emphasis on a hands-free, non invasive approach to curing maladies. There are no magic bullets and quick fixes. Each individual will have his own unique set of symptoms. Depending upon the symptoms, the therapist decides his course of treatment. And each individual takes his own time to recover.

The goal of natural therapy is to develop optimal excellent health for all patients and to teach patients the principles of excellent health. Natural therapy is used as a complementary system of healing that adequately speeds up the body’s natural ability to heal. Prevention is the ultimate goal, though therapy also includes management of symptoms.

Natural therapy usually includes a wide variety of treatment systems. Some of them are:

Clinical nutrition: Nutrition is the cornerstone of excellent health. Many diseases and conditions can be improved through changes in diet alone.

Herbal Medicine or Phytotherapy: Natural therapy relies very heavily on the use of medicinal herbs. Herbs are characterized by their minimal toxicity and maximum effect. Since herbs do not accumulate in the body, they also do not have any lasting ramifications. When selected properly, herbs offer safe, powerful and effective healing.

Traditional Chinese medicine: Pulse diagnosis, herbs, acupuncture, acutouch are all included in this system of medicine. Dating back to nearly 3,000 years ago, this stream of medicine has recently caught a lot of attention in the West.

Body manipulation: Used in conjunction with other therapies, this treatment uses a variety of systematic movements that help heal musculoskeletal and neurological problems.

Lifestyle modification: Natural therapy places full responsibility of one’s health on one’s own shoulders. Treatments are based on assessing risk factors connected to the lifestyle, diet and environment of each individual. Each of these factors is considered while developing a treatment plot.

Natural therapy can help in curing a wide variety of clinical conditions.

- Acute conditions like headaches, sore throat, asthma and allergies

- Chronic illnesses like migraine, arthritis, heart diseases and gastrointestinal diseases.

- Stress related mental and emotional problems.

- Physical injury and trauma including post-operative pain.

Different kinds of natural therapies suffered a setback because results are slow in coming. What most people do not realize is that though results may take long, the effects last a lifetime. There is usually a complete recovery from symptoms because the physician tries to boost the body’s natural resistance to dis-ease and discomfort.

Marijuana Medicine: Pros and Cons Alternative Medicine Offers Below

Marijuana Medicine: Pros and Cons Alternative Medicine Offers Below

Marijuana is an illegal drug. It works by affecting the receptors in the body that are involved with movement, memory, and vomiting. Therefore, it is used by people sometimes as means of reducing pain and nausea. Marijuana is also known as an immune suppressant.

It is derived from the seeds, leaves, and flowers of the cannabis plant. But, regardless of the positive effects that marijuana may have for people’s health, it remains illegal. There are pros and cons alternative medicine has determined for using marijuana for health reasons. The information available is basically there to help people gain more knowledge about the plant and how it can affect the body both positively and negatively.

Marijuana is an illegal substance because of its high levels of THC. THC is what is found in the plant that can alter the mind. But, this same component is also what takes away nausea and pain that are found in specific health conditions. For instance, marijuana is often used by people who suffer from different forms of cancer and are taking chemotherapy; it is also a common drug of choice for people with multiple sclerosis.

Pros and cons alternative medicine has developed involve many different elements of the drug. For instance, because marijuana is often smoked, it can have a negative effect on the person’s lungs and breathing. This is especially right for people with allergies or asthma. The mind altering effect the drug has can also be seen as a negative by some people who are not intentionally seeking a high.

All the available information that pros and cons alternative medicine has developed are a help to the person interested in using marijuana as a medicine. As the use of marijuana becomes more well loved for people who suffer from different ailments, there are many different pros and cons alternative medicine can use to determine what can be done. Then if the pros outweigh the cons, then new therapies can be developed or may be developed.

This being said, it is not quite so simple. Some medicinal marijuana does not have the same level of THC and therefore does not have the same amount of high with it. But, this again means that it is not necessarily helping the person as much as possible when the THC has been reduced. Another one of the pros and cons alternative medicine has come up with is that chemotherapy leaves people feeling really sick sometimes and the use of medicinal marijuana can help alleviate the nausea from the chemo as well as the pain from the cancer.

Using marijuana has a pain control does not seem all that weird when it is thought about. This is because morphine, Demerol, and oxy-contin are all narcotics and illegal on the street but are very commonly used for pain reduction.

What is a Naturopathic Physician?

August 27th, 2010

What is a Naturopathic Physician?

What is a Naturopathic Physician?

A naturo-what? Do any of your friends or family receive health care from a Naturopathic Physician? A Naturopathic Physician is a licensed doctor of naturopathic medicine and will either use the designation of ND or NMD. Naturopathic doctors are currently licensed in 15 states, 2 US territories and 4 Canadian provinces. In order to be eligible to practice in licensed states, one must graduate from an accredited medical school and pass a national licensing exam (NPLEX). While all states do not license NDs, Arizona does. In Arizona, a Naturopathic Physician’s scope of practice includes: all primary medical care services including performing physical examinations, ordering labs and prescribing pharmaceuticals. Sounds like a regular doctor, right? So what’s the difference…A Naturopathic doctor is different in their focus and philosophy. As a part of the Naturopathic philosophy, the mind, body, and spirit are all seen as interconnected.  Thus optimal health can only be achieved through the balancing of the whole body. Believing in the premise that the body can heal itself, we attempt to restore the body to wellness rather than fight disease. Most Naturopathic Physicians are very focused on teaching and educating patients. A strong emphasis is placed on lifestyle modifications including diet strategies, fitness, and stress reduction techniques. In Arizona, many ND’s treat their patients with Chinese medicine and acupuncture. Botanical, Homeopathic, and vitamin and mineral supplementation are routinely implemented as a part of overall patient care.  Many Naturopathic Physicians offer nutrient intravenous therapies and detoxification programs.  ND”S may also perform physical manipulations/adjustments and massage therapies. A Naturopathic Doctor can treat an array of acute and chronic medical conditions. Naturopathic doctors are very well trained and often refer to other medical specialists and/or work alongside other physician in an integrated manner.

Specifically, all Naturopathic Physicians upon graduating vow to uphold the following tenants:

    * First, Do No Harm. Utilize the most natural, least invasive and least toxic therapies first.

    * Identify and Treat the Cause. Look beyond the symptoms to effectively address the underlying cause(s) of illness.

    * The Healing Power of Nature. Trust the body’s inherent wisdom to heal itself.

    * Treat the Whole Person. View the body as an integrated whole comprised of physical, mental, emotional and spiritual dimensions.

    * Doctor as Teacher. Educate the patients in the steps to achieving and maintaining optimal health.

    * Prevention. Focus on promoting health and wellness, and preventing disease.

While many insurances do not pay for naturopathic care, some labs and imaging may be covered depending on the particular insurance plot. United Heath care offers its members an option known as OptumHealth, which allows for a generous discount on all naturopathic services.  Please contact United Health Care for more information on this benefit. Study alternative medicine with renewed focus on anatomy, physiology & cadaver

August 24th, 2010

Study alternative medicine with renewed focus on anatomy, physiology & cadaver

Every alternative medicine eg;Ayurveda,Homoepathy,Naturopathy,Yogatherapy requires the sound knowledge of body constitution and its function. On the structure of body different modes of alternative therapy have been evolved. It includes the medicinal plants, herbs found commonly or in the fantastic Himalayan range. In Buddist era its study ascended its prime and fantastic ayurvedacharyas like Charaka,Sushruta,Nagarjuna brought forward the subject to its zenith. It is still the favoured medicine of crores of Indian population. Ayurveda is considered the 5th Veda ,the Indian holy religious book.

The Yoga is another Indian contribution to the modern world. Fantastic Patanjali evolved some postures which are of immense medical value. It cures many musculoskeletal diseases involving muscles, joints, tendons, nerves and bony skeleton. Each asana is specific for a region of our body.It also has immense effect on the soft tissues of our body and precludes any unnecessary deposit of stout or laxity of skin or fascia.Contrary to the well loved belief, the Yoga exercises have profound influence on mind status. A fit and resilient body keeps the mind  alert and sound so that life becomes a productive progress.

The homoepathy is the gift of fantastic German scholar Hahnemann who showed to the world that chemicals, herbs, metals which are otherwise toxic to human body in high doses are best medicines when used in dilutest form. The symptoms that it creats in toxic doses are studied intensely. Sometimes those symptoms may occur in other naturally occurring diseases and those medicines which have similar toxic symptoms may be given in minutest dilutions with effective result. This was a fantastic discovery and homoepathy subject has been built up and studied worldwide.

The study of alternative medicine requires the simultaneous study of body’s detailed anatomy and physiology. In the study of every medicine it is the essential pre requisite. So more emphasis will be given at first or simultaneous study of AP(Anatomy & Physiology)with special study of muscles, nerves, joints, fascias in order to know the Yoga.

Study of neuroscience is thrilling and electrifying.Electric currents normally flows along the nerve path and that is measurable. It will be a nice and revealing experience how yogic process of meditational exercises bring about a sense of gift when a new mental power is achieved.

Seeing is believing. A conception of body structure cannot be made unless different muscles, nerves, brain, heart, lungs and other organs are seen physically and studied their way of function. We have the arrangement to extend that mode of study. For theoretcal discussion traditional class room study or online study can be arranged. For dead body dissection we require the candidate to contact my email:dattatin@hotmail.com

For study of Ayurveda,Yoga and Homoepathy theoreticals can be imparted by online route or class room but practice of practical requires special arrangement of case study and prior email contact.

Dr Atindra N Datta achieved his MBBS degree from CALCUTTA university and then he went to Varanasi where he studied anatomy, yoga and Ayurveda at the Banaras Hindu University and received MS. he returned to Bengal and served different medical colleges under the Govt.of West bengal until 2005 when he took retirement. He is now the professor of Medical University of the Americas(www.mua.edu) in Nevis island of West Indies. He frequently visits USA.

I’m Depressed – Are Alternative Depression Medications The Answer ?

August 23rd, 2010

I’m Depressed – Are Alternative Depression Medications The Answer ?

The small answer is a resounding yes! Looking at my two depressed friends who have been on anti depressant medications for a lifetime, I am now more convinced than ever that the only way out for them is a comprehensive type of treatment which combines diet, exercise, therapy and medication, preferably herbal ones. That for me is the key to alternative depression medications.

I have seen too many people’s lives thwarted and stunted under the weight of anti depressant meds and their dreadful side effects. What a price they have to pay as men may become impotent and women gain weight and feel sorry (and even more depressed) that their societal body image is just not what they want.

Let us look at why people are depressed and the answer lies mainly but not entirely in the chemical neurotransmitters called serotonin, endorphin and norepinephrine. Serotonin seems to be the one which can determine so much in our daily routine and how we cope with life. It will affect not only our mood but also appetite, sleep, body temperature and even muscular movements. People who suffer from depression usually have a serotonin deficiency and that has been the key to all anti depression treatment. A lack of serotonin can lead to Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) , anxiety and schizophrenia.

One of the best alternative depression medications is sunlight. If you are lucky enough to live in a sunny climate, you will be able to delight in loads of sunlight. For those who do not, I would say that getting even ten minutes of sunlight can make all the difference to depression. It is no accident that the best possible treatment for SAD (seasonal affective disorder) which is a mild form of depression, is natural light therapy which can be in the form of special lamps for that purpose.

The second best of the alternative depression medications is exercise although it is not a medication in the strictest sense of the term. That is the best way of raising the serotonin levels in your brain and the endorphins which get activated are sometimes called the ‘pleased chemicals’. Have you ever met anyone in a terrible mood after exercise ? I doubt it .

Diet, while not strictly one of the alternative depression medications, is an essential element in any form of depression treatment. It is no accident that carbohydrates are called ‘comfort food’ because in fact they tend to raise the serotonin levels in the brain as opposed to proteins which tend to have the opposite effect. Go for the brown carbs rather than the white ones so brown pasta, whole wheat bread, fruit and nuts are in. The white carbohydrates tend to give you a sugar spike which can lead to mood swings.

That leaves us with medication and one of the best alternative depression medications is the herbal one because it has very few side effects and will let you regain your mood and serenity without any nasty surprises.
